CallisonRTKL seeks an Architectural Designer to join its Los Angeles office.

Responsibilities

With preliminary direction from a licensed architect, analyze client needs and utilize independent thinking to develop approaches in all phases of architectural design for international multistory mixed use, corporate/commercial, retail, and entertainment projects, from schematic design and design development through construction documentation and construction administration, including modifications to existing structural systems, space planning, custom detailing, research for building codes compliance, barrier free compliance, and the integration of sustainable concepts into projects; develop design documents and presentation packages for all design phases, schematic design through construction documents including documenting architectural plans, elevations, sections, and details in imperial or metric standards for jurisdictional agency corrections using freehand sketches and 2D/3D modeling and rendering, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) using Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhinoceros, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; analyze sketches, photographs, notes, and site survey of existing conditions & other input material to determine best approaches for completion of drawings to solve technical issues of design in relation to sites and buildings; develop site analysis studies requiring site photography, code research, base drawings, and diagrams; participate in project team discussions and public meetings to provide recommendations when revisions from government agencies, planning officials, clients and other stakeholder groups are necessary and translate clients’ functional and spatial requirements for site and structures into conceptual design solutions; produce 2D/3D hand drawn renderings in pencil, ink, and markers for design development; detail and document design packages using Revit; develop BIM strategy for model structure and coordination among consultants and within team; coordinate international projects, international code research and participate in meetings with client, local architect, local vendors, consultants, and contractors; coordinate the preparation of project drawings and specifications across all disciplines for the project team with consultants and project managers to forecast manpower each week for project team members assigned to the project, revisions in the drawing and specifications log, and problems related to schedule, budget, or functional needs of the client in accordance with the approved scope of work in compliance with revisions to scope as authorized by the client/owner; assist with establishing task schedule and manpower requirements; assist with identifying weekly project requirements, project long term needs, and monitoring work progress to ensure the project team is compliant with all project milestones, and set up all project communications and record storage; achieve profitability on projects by assisting with fee, staffing, schedule, scope of work, billings, collections, and projections; apply architectural principles to review all related shop drawings, samples and mock ups, evaluate general contractor bids and project budgets; conduct site visits, field observation and meetings to review the progress of construction; select materials, equipment, and systems to meet the budget for the project, keeping local construction techniques in mind for international projects, and work with consultants, local vendors, product reps, and fabricators to meet overall project objectives; coordinate with mechanical, electrical, plumbing, fire protection (MEP/FP), civil, structural, landscape, code, traffic, parking, signage, acoustic, curtain wall, facade maintenance, acoustic, vertical transportation, lighting, geotechnical, and low voltage/telecommunications consultants to incorporate building systems in the preparation of construction documents; coordinate with contractors, respond to requests for information (RFI’s), review and respond to contractor change orders, and perform necessary modifications of drawings and specifications as construction projects progress and changes in dimensions, materials, and other aspects of design arise.


Requirements


Bachelor of Architecture (5 year) or foreign equivalent plus 2 years of experience to include working on predesign and all phases of architectural design for projects, including new interior construction and expansion, for international and domestic projects, such as multistory mixed use, corporate/commercial, retail, and entertainment projects; participating in all phases of urban infill development projects, including urban design, mixed use regeneration, urban revitalization, urban planning, streetscapes, land use and transportation, and open space planning projects; developing design documents and presentation packages from schematic design through design development including documenting architectural plans and elevations, using freehand sketches and 2D/3D modeling and rendering, including Building Information Modeling (BIM) using Revit, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhinoceros, Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign; developing exterior envelope design requiring enlarged plans, elevations, sections, details and axonometric drawings; designing and concept developing for competitions requiring expedited concept development and document production; interpreting traffic impact analysis and management plans and analyzing as built plans, photographs, notes, and other input material to determine best approaches for completion of drawings to solve technical issues of design in relation to sites and buildings; providing research, planning, and design solutions by applying knowledge of design, construction technology, ADA, zoning and building code compliance; detailing and documenting design packages using Revit; developing BIM strategy for model structure and coordination among consultants and within team; free hand sketching using pencils or marker drawings such as perspectives, axonometrics, space plans, elevations and details for presentations; incorporating LEED sustainable design concepts in architectural design and preparing 3D energy models to evaluate daily sun exposure, analyze heatloads, analyze weather data to identify the passive design potentials based on the local climate and building use to minimize building energy needs and maximize energy savings; working in conjunction with the firm-wide sustainable design leadership in the continued improvement and development of firm-wide high performance design to maintain and improve the quality and consistency of design environment and deliverables; researching international building codes and regulations, collecting data, and writing reports and presentations to incorporate research and data into architectural designs; developing concept alternatives, studies and development requiring 3D digital massing, floor plans, space plans, building elevations, sections and perspectives; selecting materials to meet the budget for the project, keeping local construction techniques in mind for international projects, and working with consultants, local vendors, product reps, and fabricators to meet overall project objectives; researching new materials and design and construction practices that support energy conservation and sustainability for international and domestic projects; assisting in identifying and quantifying tasks outside the scope of the Owner-Architect agreement for negotiation of additional services; coordinating international projects, international code research and participating in meetings with client, local architect, local vendors, consultants, and contractors; issuing drawings and specifications in accordance with the Project Delivery Manual.
